Learn How

The International Thespian Excellence Awards, or Thespys™ for short, recognize the highest level of achievement in school theatre performance and technical theatre.

This educational program (formerly National Individual Events) gives Thespians — students who have been inducted into the International Thespian Society — the opportunity to receive constructive feedback on prepared theatrical material and technical designs. Students who achieve overall Superiors at their chapter event and earn the top scores in their category at the International Thespian Festival (ITF) earn International Thespian Excellence Awards.

For 2020, ITF is going virtual — and so are the Thespys! Here’s what you need to know.

DO I QUALIFY?

  1. The Thespy Awards are open to Thespians and Junior Thespians. You must be inducted into the International Thespian Society in order to participate.

  2. For 2020, students who achieved overall Superiors at their chapter event are invited to take part as are all students whose chapter event was canceled because of COVID-19. That includes Thespians from California, Florida, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Washington, and West Virginia.

  3. If you qualified with a duet or group performance, but are not able to get together or edit a video for social distancing safety reasons, you may change to a solo category.

HOW TO REGISTER AND PARTICIPATE

  1. Register for an all-access pass to Virtual ITF and select the Thepsys as an add-on.

  2. Create an account here on the Thespys website.

  3. Complete the submission form for your Thespy, including name and category details. Select ‘Save and Finalize’ to submit.

  4. Your submission form must be completed in its entirety. Space has been provided to upload performance presentations or technical presentation materials. Failure to complete any part of the form may result in disqualification.

  5. It’s OK to submit a video that doesn’t completely conform to in-person judging rules (if you have an existing video where you are not wearing all-black clothing, for example).

  6. For troupe directors registering multiple students: Please double-check to ensure you have completed submissions for every Thespy you paid for when registering for Virtual ITF.

  7. If you have questions about this process, please contact events@schooltheatre.org.

  8. The deadline to submit is June 8, 2020.
